Just a Note.

Written by sally @ 8:15 am — Section: sally

You know what I hate? When people say “Thanks in advance” in an email. It’s so presumptuous. A friendly “Thanks!” closes almost every work email I send, but there’s something mildly threatening about “thanks in advance.” I know you will do exactly what I asked, the person seems to be saying, because look! I already thanked you, and now you are in my debt.

I’m less annoyed by “thanks in advance” than I am the acronym of “TIA!” Argh.

You’re right! I did not realize how annoying this was, but you’re right. Very presumptuous.

Thanks in advance was the bane of our existence at Holly High. Every memo from central office and administration had that saying on it. Why don’t you just put, “If you don’t do this, you will be fired.” on the memo instead. That’s what you really mean. It is very similar to the students who constantly tell me, “I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but …” You just want to tell them, you do mean to be disrespectful and you are being disrespectful. UGH!!!
