Mayoral Ipecac.
It’s a dark day for Jackson. The mayor, Frank Melton, was on trial this week for taking a sledgehammer to an alleged crack house in the middle of the night and destroying it. The minors who live with him were directed to do so as well. So were his bodyguards. There were witnesses. Apparently there were pictures. But Melton and his bodyguards were found not guilty on all 11 felony counts.
I think I may have to vomit.

i just read all the stories on the C-L website, and i was left with the impression that the prosecution wasn’t trying all that hard to get a conviction (“District Attorney Faye Peterson said she doesn’t believe the jury followed the law in acquitting Melton and the bodyguards. She had assigned the case to two of her assistants”).

I think the jury was probably scared. That’s my theory. I just can’t stomach that they possibly said to each other, “Hmm, the law says that knocking down people’s houses is wrong. But y’all, Frank’s so lovable and cuddly! Let’s acquit!” My vote is with fear that Frank would knock down their houses, too.

To sum it all up in a word, inept. The whole thing was one big expensive joke.

I certainly hope Frank didn’t play to our poetic souls.

After reading about this in the paper all last week when I was there, I cannot believe they found him not guilty. That’s insane.
