The French Connection.

Saturday I went to see The Science of Sleep and Sunday I watched Jules et Jim. It’s like those French have a different word for everything.

I love movies that are packed with details and have lots of stuff in the characters’ houses, and one day I’ll have to watch The Science of Sleep in focus so that I can see all the awesomeness in Stephane and Stephanie’s apartments. For the first half of the movie, the left side was out of focus, and then that was corrected and the right side got fuzzy.

The Science of Sleep was weird and pretty, but the main difference between it and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is that it is unclear which parts are real and which parts are dreams — it takes watching more of the movie to figure out which version of events from three scenes ago is the “correct” one. Not that it matters — it actually doesn’t.

Jules et Jim, however, existed in one reality, but for some reason it reminded me of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. You know, the French-WWI-open marriage-intellectual version. However, I do not recall Katharine Ross driving off a bridge with Sundance in tow to punish him for leaving her, but maybe I missed that part.
